Smith wins Formula 5000 Series again!

Round  5 of the MSC Tasman Revival Formula 5000 Series was held at Teretonga Park in Invercargill on February 18-20. Entering the round, No.8 sponsored driver Ken Smith was leading the series by 4 points from Steve Ross. Smith had another weekend of good results, with a 2nd place, 1st place and a 3rd place to end the round tied with Ross, leaving Smith with his 4 point championship lead unchanged. With neither Smith nor Ross attending the final round in Australia, Smith has won the chamiponship with one round remmaining. The is Smith's 3rd consecutive Championship win, proving that he really is the man to beat in a Formula 5000. Smith also holds the enviable record of being the only car to have completed all three seasons without a mechanical DNF. Just shows what No.8 products can do for you...

Team mnate Andy Higgins also had a successful weekend, qualifying 3rd and finishing 5th. 3rd & 4th in the three races - very impressive for only his second outing.

Next season begins in October so keep an eye out for that.

No.8 finish 7th overall in Cannonball Run 11

The Cannonball Run 11 was held January 8th, and No.8 was again on board as both an event sponsor and a participating team. The event this time started at Albany and travelled over 500km, via Kaikohe, to finish at Northridge Country Estate in Silverdale. Over 180 teams entered the event, with almost all of them making huge efforts with their costume and car themes. This time No.8 went for a Bogan theme, looking to win the Biggest Shitter Award. We took our shop hack - a 1990 Toyota Corolla wagon - made it look as terrible as we possibly could, with different wheels on every corner, different coloured panels, smashed windows, no bonnet (exposing the mighty 1500 pushrod powerplant), a fake ram-air scoop, and lots and lots of billowing white exhaust smoke. So much smoke in fact that we weren't allowed to park with the other entrants initially. Unfortunately, in a unexplainable decision, the Biggest Shitbox Award was given to a Starlet that could only wish it was as shit as our Corolla. Still we took the moral victory as well as the Biggest Hair Award for our multi-coloured mullets, complemented by singlets and stubbies. We also managed to come in 7th overall, out of the 180 teams, so we were very stoked with that!

Bone leads SS2000 0-1600cc Class after 4 rounds

Round 4 of the SS2000 Championship was held at Taupo Motorsport Park on January 8th & 9th. With the tight track suiting Rick's smaller, lighter car Rick once again performed well, qualifying 4th overall. A well fought battle in Race 1 had Rick finish 5th overall. The second and third races, both handicaps, did not work out as well for Rick, finishing 11th in both races. His consistency however lifted him up to 5th overall for the round, and first in the 0-1600cc class. With four rounds complete, and three still to run, Rick now sits in 4th position overall on the Championship Table, and leads the 0-1600cc class Championship comfortably.

Mixed Fortunes for No.8 at NZFMR

Ken Smith and Andrew Higgins has mixed fortunes at the first round of the NZ Festival of Motor Racing held at Hampton Downs on 21-23 January. It was a very busy weekend with Ken racing his T430 Formula 500 car, as well as a Dallara Formula 3 car in the Super Historic class, a Lola T664 in the Historic Formula Ford class, and a Toyota Corona in the 1980s Touring Car class. As well as running his Lola T400 Formula 5000, Andy also ran a Reynard Formula Atlantic car in the Super Historic class.

In qualifying Ken qualified on pole position, while Andy was sidelined with cooling problems. Unfortunately this spelled the end of the weekend for Andy.

Ken won Race 1 in torrential conditions, before Races 2 and 3 were abandoned due to bad weather.

In Super Historic Ken qualified 3rd, and Andy 8th. Ken took the lead in the first race, with Andy moving up to second place. In very wet conditions Andy managed to squeeze past Ken on the run to the line, beating him by 0.001s, and giving the No.8 backed drivers a 1-2 finish. Race 2 was another 1-2 finish, although this time it was Ken taking line honours.

Andy Higgins campaigns new cars

Andy Higgins, who last season ran a Swift DB4 in the Super Historic class, has imported two new cars for this season. Andy has found and secured a Reynard Formula Atlantic car which he will again campaign in the Super Historic class, as well as a Lola Formula 5000, which he will use to compete in the Tasman Revival Series. No.8 is involved with both cars keep you eyes peeled for Andy to be making waves this season.

NZPC vs NZV8 Drag Combat 2010

This year the NZPC Import Allstars Drag Challenge was replaced with Drag Combat, an Import vs V8 challenge in the theme established by Dragmasters. A good turnout of cars and good weather gave a laid back feel for the day and some impressive times as well. Brent Curran was there running the No.8 sponsored CBR RX2 and ended up in the Import Final against Robbie Ward's RIPS FED Rail. We were hoping for a big upset but unfortunately Robbie squeezed thru to beat Brent for the win. Karen Hay ran the quickest times of the day overall in her T Bucket Altered. There were also plenty of high quality road cars, both competing and parked up around the pits and carparks.

Bundy Racing Season So Far

Bundy Racing entered their 9P Superstock in the NZ Superstock Championship in Rotorua on December 29th. Brett was looking good in qualifying before a failed fuel pump caused an early stop for Brett, meaning he failed to qualify for the final.

At the NZ Superstock Grand Prix in Wanganui on the 1st & 2nd of January Brett qualified easily, with the second fastest time of the day. After the first two races Brett was 5th equal on points but unfortunately a failing spark plug caused them to slowly drop back thru the field in the final, finishing 9th equal overall.

Stockcar 5P has also been competing, piloted by a number of drivers including Kevin Large, Michael Hyslop, Adam Joblin & Simon Joblin, as well as Brett. During these meetings the car has achieved 2 wins, 2 seconds and a 4th position so that is a good result for Bundy Racing.

The Stockcar Team Champs are on February 4th and 5th in Palmerston north and Brett has been selected to run as a part of the Manawatu Mustangs so we're hopeful for a good result for the team.

No.8 now available in Pacific Islands

As of Christmas 2010 No.8 products will now also be available in the Pacific Islands. The first shipment of product has been dispatched to Tahiti and further shipments will be following into other areas of the Pacific in the new year.

Clarke Hopkins leads Central Muscle Car Series

Round 2 of the Central Muscle Car Series was held at Pukekohe on December 4/5 and Clarke Hopkins was competing in his No.8 sponsored Torana. After qualifying 6th, Clarke finished Race 1 in 4th place. Race 2 was a handicap race and Clarke started form the back in 24th position, fighting his way through to finish 13th.Race 3 was another handicap race and again Clarke was starting from the rear in 26th position. Lap 3 a big accident occurred, badly damaging two cars but thankfully not involving Clarke, and after a full restart Clarke came through to finish 8th in class. Despite not winning any races Clarke's consistent points scoring has lifted him into the lead of the Championship after Round 2. Round 3 is at Hampton Downs on January 29/30th so hopefully the good run continues there.

No.8 Sponsors Kie Parris' Silvia

Kie Parris, foreman at Motorsport Services, has recently completed a build on a S15 Silvia to be used for a number of uses including drifting and burnouts. No.8 is proud to be backing Kie so keep your eyes peeled for the Silvia at events this summer, and of course at Motorsport Services' premises at Hampton Downs.

No.8 Sponsors Clarke Hopkins' Torana

No.8 is happy to be supporting Clarke Hopkins as he competes in the 2010/2011 Central Muscle Car Series. The Hopkins' Torana is an awesome car, and is always immaculately presented. Go and have a look at the next round and check out this ex-NZV8 magazine feature car.

The first round of the Central Muscle Car Series took place at Manfeild on November 6/7. Unfortunately in qualifying Clarke ran over a tyre marker and got it caught under the car resulting in a stop to remove it and lost time. He still managed 5th place however.

The first race Clarke had a bad start with excessive wheelspin off the line dropping him back to 10th place before he pushed his way back through to finish in 5th.

The second race was a handicap race with Clarke starting off grid 22. By lap two he has surged thru to 12th position and a big incident on lap 5 saw multiple cars taken out raising Clarke further to a 4th place finish.

Race 3 was another handicap race, Clarke this time starting from 20th position. He had pulled up to 9th by lap 3 before getting stuck behind a Falcon for the remainder of the race.

The final race was yet another handicap and after starting from grid 18 Clarke came home in 9th place to give him a result of 3rd overall  for the round, and within striking distance of the leader.

The next round is at Thunder in the Park, held at Pukekohe on December 4/5. See you there!

Tasman Revival Formula 5000 Series Round 1

Andy Higgins recently purchased the ex Mario Andretti/Vels Parnelli Jones Racing Lola T400 out of Germany and completed a very quick, but complete, rebuild of the car prior to the first round of the Tasman Revival Series on October 30/31. With no time for testing the cars first run was Friday morning and the majority of the day was spent ironing out issues and getting the motor running smoothly. A fuel injection problem meant Andy missed qualifying as well. Not ideal.

Starting from  the back of the grid Andy managed to chew through much of the field to finish his first ever Formula 5000 race in 5th place. The second race brought another 5th place finish and the Lady Wigram Trophy resulted in a 7th position. That gave Andy a 5th overall position for the round which is very promising considering the minimal preparation time.

Meanwhile Ken Smith continued his dominance of the class with three race wins, and his time winning the Lady Wigram Trophy.

The next round takes place at the NZ Festival of Motor Racing at Hampton Downs on January 21-23 and promises to be epic with over 40 cars confirmed for the grid.

2010 Scrap Palace Burnout Competition

The 2010 Scrap Palace Morrinsville Burnout Competition took place on October 30th and delivered exactly what it promised - burnouts. A good number of show cars turned out to support but it was the burnouts that the crowd were there to see, and smoke flowed, or should we say billowed, all day.

Full Throttle 2010

The Manukau City Council again ran the Full Throttle Weekend, held at Manukau Events Centre. The three day affair, held over Labour Weekend, was free for everyone and was divided into 3 days.Saturday was run by the Mustang club, Sunday by 4 & Rotary, and Monday by the Council 9incorporating Auckland Motorsport and the Targa). No.8 were there with Auckland Motorsport (who run the upcoming Cannonball Run) and we took alaong a few of our sponsored vehicles as well, including the No.8 MCLaren M6GTR, Phil Walters' Mini Cooper, Steve Forbes' Alfa Romeo &  Andy Higgins' Formula Atlantic. A great weekend all round.

Rick Bone completes Round 2 with van gearbox!

After Round 1 Rick had blown a gearbox and unfortunately the replacement parts were not ready for Round 2, meaning Rick had no choice but to run an old gearbox out of a van!
Qualifying at Taupo went well with Rick qualifying 1st in the 1600 class and an amazing 3rd overall, in a grid of 28 cars. Not bad for a driveline from a van! Must have been the No.8 Brake N Parts Cleaner and No.8 Engine Degreaser that Rick had used to clean it up that did the trick!
Race 1 was successful also, with Rick finishing 3rd overall and everything holding together.
Race 2 was a handicap race and had Rick starting near the back of the grid, 1min 35s behind the first car. Rick was charging and making good progress before a signal wire from the computer to the distributor broke 3 laps from the end, leaving him stranded.
Starting from the back again in Race 3 Rick powered thru the field to finish 6th overall, with the $50 gearbox delivering the goods.
The DNF in race 2  pushed Rick back to 10 overall for the round which leaves him in 6th overall for the Championship to dat, and still leading the 1600cc class.

The next round is at Pukekohe on December 4/5.

Kids in Cars Bathurst at the Park 2010

Kids in Cars is a charity that works to raise funds for sick kids, as well as giving them and their families the chance to go for a ride in some cars that they would never normally get to experience. Oneof their annual events in the KIC Bathurst in the Park, run at Pukekohe Park Race on October 10th, Bathurst Sunday. A huge variety of cars turned out to drive the circuit, take kids for rides, and watch Bathurst on the big screen. One of the more exceptional cars there was a Ferrari built for Michael Schumacher, one of only two (the other going to Eddie Irvine. It's rarity (and probable value) didn;t keep the owner off the track tho! Kids in Cars run events throughout the year so we encourage you all to keep an eye out andjoin in the fun!

Britz at the Beach 2010

The first ever running of Britz at the Beach took place in Tairua on Staurday October 9th 2010. It was a British festival in all respects, including many British cars, foods, games, sports and characters. With the first event a success you can bet that this will be coming back bigger and better next year.

Even the Queen uses No.8!

Rick Bone begins 2010/11 SS2000 season

The SS2000 Championship began in October with Round 1 at Manfeild. Qualifying went well with Rick qualifying 1st in the 1600 class and 7th overall.
Race 1was not so pleasing, with the gearbox blowing on the start line, leaving Rick with only 4th gear. This meant a lot of time on the rev limiter, causing an oil filler cap to come off and leaving a constant smoke trail.Despite only having one gear Rick finished in 9th overall.
For race 2 the gearbox had been removed and replaced with a standard box, and Rick managed a good 4th place.
The final race was a handicap race and Rick came thru with a 7th place finish.

2010 NAC NZ Drift Nationals & Super Lap Round 1

The 2010 NZ Drift Nationals were held, in conjunction with Round One of Super Lap, on October 3rd at Hampton Downs Raceway. Superb weather meant a record drift crowd of over 8000 spectators came out to watch the drifting, circuit racing and burnout comp. Although the judged section of track was a bit short and difficult to see, the drifting was high quality, and Gaz Whiter eventually walked away with the 2010 NZ Drift title after beating Andrew Redwood in his LS1 powered Series 4 RX7 in the final.

In the Super Lap contest Eddie Pinkham came out fastest in his R32 Skyline, followed by two WRXs.

This car is exceptionally well built and is as much as show car as it is a strip weapon. Be sure to have a look the next time you see it.

Speed Show 2010

Speedshow hit the ASB Showgrounds over the weekend of July 24 and 25.We were there, sharing a stand with the guys (and girls) from NAC Insurance. NAC had Daynom Templeman's RX7 drifter on display while No.8 presented Phil Walters' Mini Copper show car. Brent Curran, of Curran Brothers Racing, also had his RX2 drag car on display in the Castrol Edge stand, sporting new No.8 livery on the rear guards. The event was a lot bigger than last year, with a wider focus than just motorsport, and the crowds seemed to have grown considerably too. The 'stars of the show' this year were the Stillen Ford GT, the Stillen GTR, and the McLaren M12, but there was plentyall over the venue to keep everyone amused. A trip to the Gold Coast 600 was also up for grabs to the person who set the fastest time on the electric karts, and as it turned out a time set on Sat morning held thru until the end of the weekend unbeaten. There were also demos on in the action arena throughout the weekend including a nostalgia funny car, motorbike trials, drifting and gymkhana action. Roll on the fun.

Snowball Run 2010

Following the success of January's Cannonball Run, Auckland Motorsport ran their first Frostbite Edition of the Snowball Run on June 26 and 27. Naturally No.8 entered a team. The run started from North Harbour Stadium and made it's way South via numerous stops, challenges and waypoints to Taupo. Saturday night had Ewen Gilmour entertaining the crowd at the Dead Man's Ball before Sunday morning gave the competitors a chance to cut loose on the old Taupo club track. Early afternoon the run back to Auckland began and this time, while a route was provided dragging the field through the windiest backroads available, there was minimal challenges or stops required and it became a straight out drag through. Leaving the track in Taupo around 60th, the No.8 team were pretty happy to roll into the Albany Inn as the 7th car back just after 5pm. Considering we were campaigning the much feared and respected Toyota Camry Gracia Wagon, we were pretty happy to be finishing ahead of the majority of the field, including Ferrraris, Porsches, Lotuses and all manner of modified Jap performance cars. The weekend was a resounding success with no-one doing anything 'too stupid' and the only real damage occuring when the Class A Kustoms RX7 lost it's bonnet on a long straight north of Taupo, at 'slightly above the speed limit', resulting in what we can only assume was a sh*t scary moment and some muddied pants. Roll on the next event we say!

Rick Bone 1st 1600cc Class and 3rd Overall

The SS2000 Championship held its final round at Taupo and it was all on to decide the final placings for both the 1600cc class and the overall championship. Rick qualified on pole and was running well in Race 1 until the gearbox jammed in 3rd gear on lap 6. Rick battled on to finish 3rd. They changed their gearbox for a standard Datsun Sunny box for Sundays handicap races and despite being 1.6s a lap slower still managed a 3rd place in Races 2 and 3. That gave Rick 2nd place for the weekend, meaning he finished the Championship in 3rd place overall and1st in the 1600cc class, for the fourth season in a row! A big congratulations to Rick from the team here at No.8. The car now begins a full rebuild before battle recommences next season later this year. No.8 will be on board with Rick again so stay tuned to see another David vs Goliath battle unfold next season.

Auckland All Ford Day 2010

Auckland All Ford Day was held at North Harbour Stadium in Albany on April 11th. Hundreds of Fords, from Model Ts to 2010 Falcons, turned up to keep the crowds occupied. The aim of the game was to raise some money for Kids in Cars, which hopefully we all achieved. No.8 was there giving our prize packs throughout the day to make sure no-ones cars had to suffer. Check out the photos in the No.8 All Ford Day gallery.
